Writer workflow
- Open Incident Reports and start a new report, or claim a call imported from Active911.
- Complete each guided section and any department fields.
- Run the checks and fix what they flag.
- Submit for review.
- If the auditor returns it, read the notes, fix the report, and resubmit.
Validation and review are different
Validation checks the report’s structure. An auditor still reviews accuracy and the narrative.
Sending to NERIS
Approval doesn’t send the report. An authorized administrator queues approved reports, and they are transmitted with retries. The Transmissions page shows what was sent, accepted, or failed. In Training Mode, every rule runs but nothing is sent.
After approval
Approved reports can be locked. You can print internal or public copies and export JSON.
Origin-and-cause investigations
NERIS treats a fire investigation as a second submission, so it has its own lifecycle on the report. Nothing exists until someone opens one, which keeps every medical call free of an empty form.
- Open the report and choose Open investigation. The incident must already be accepted by NERIS.
- Fill in the sections that apply — Findings, and Structure Fire Origin or Outside Fire Origin. Only the applicable ones are shown, and each section saves as you leave it.
- Watch the status: Draft while it is being written, Ready once the listed blockers are cleared, Completed after NERIS accepts it.
- Send it. It receives its own NERIS investigation ID, separate from the incident’s.
An investigation opened by mistake can be discarded up until it is sent. After NERIS has it, it can only be reopened and corrected. An incident can be closed and accepted while its investigation is still open.
