Incident Reporting

Incident Reporting provides guided NERIS reports that can start from Active911 calls, are checked by a validation engine, and are reviewed by an auditor. Approval does not send anything by itself: an authorized administrator queues approved reports, which are transmitted to NERIS with retries and logged on the Transmissions page. Departments work in Training, Sandbox, or Production mode.

End-to-end workflow

Move a report from draft to NERIS

  1. 1

Complete NERIS setup: department ID, environment, and readiness checks.

  2. 2

Add department fields and set report rules such as required narrative or lock on approval.

  3. 3

Optionally turn on CAD importing so Active911 calls become draft reports.

  4. 4

Writers start a report or claim an imported call and complete the guided sections.

  5. 5

Validate and submit; the auditor approves or returns the report for corrections.

  6. 6

An authorized administrator queues approved reports for NERIS.

  7. 7

Watch the Transmissions page and retry any failures.

Common questions

Answers before you get stuck

Does approval send the report to NERIS?

No. An authorized administrator queues approved reports, and the transmission worker sends them.

Can we practice first?

Yes. Training Mode runs every NERIS rule without sending anything.

Why can a validated report still be returned?

Validation checks structure. An auditor still reviews accuracy, completeness, and the narrative.

Does every report need an investigation?

No. The origin-and-cause investigation is opened only when a fire is investigated, and it is sent to NERIS separately from the incident.
